Beaumont officially has joined 42 other cultural districts in cities across Texas, which could enhance property values, thereby increasing property tax revenues and growth to the city.

With about two dozen museums and exhibition spaces, historic buildings and venues, Downtown Beaumont Cultural Arts District representatives hope the designation and resulting improvements will increase the city’s ability to develop and enhance downtown.

The program, established about 10 years ago, makes the qualifying district eligible for certain grants that range from $3,000 to $250,000 when money is allocated by the Texas Legislature. During the last legislative session, the state gave $10 million for cultural district projects — double what it had designated in the prior session.
