Emily Peacock: Awake and Breathing at AMSET

EMILY PEACOCK: Awake and Breathing Hard will welcome visitors into the world of multimedia artist Emily Peacock, whose work explores issues of identity, intimacy, loss, motherhood, protection and safety. She also addresses her battles with Postpartum depression, a public health issue that affects 10 to 15 percent of mothers. By talking with new mothers and making visual work for a public audience, Peacock encourages women to open up about their experiences without fear or shame and start to de-stigmatize this disorder. This exhibition will be driven by autobiographical explorations through photography, sculpture, and video works.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Peacock earned her degree at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and her Masters at the University of Houston. Her work has been exhibited in exhibitions at galleries and art spaces including the Houston Center for Photography, Art League Houston, Lawndale Art Center, Anzenberger Gallery in Vienna, Austria, the Galveston Arts Center, and Blue Star Lab in San Antonio, among others. She is currently a professor at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas and lives in Houston, Texas. Her work is included in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

This exhibition is generously funded in part by the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation.

This exhibition is composed mainly of thirty paintings by Houston-based painter David McGee. The abstract series titled Urban Dread consists of mixed-media paintings. The series will be in dialogue with other oil and mixed media paintings. Through thought-provoking paintings McGee explores his role as a black, male artist in 21st century America. Challenging labels, his work comments on contemporary culture and his place within it.

Born in Lockhart, Louisiana, David McGee currently resides in Houston, Texas. McGee received his BA from Prairie View A&M University, and since has become one of the most prolific and renowned painters in the Houston art scene and beyond. His paintings have been the focus of several solo exhibitions at DiverseWorks and Texas Gallery. McGee’s work is held in the collections of many prominent institutions including The Menil Collection, Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Addison Gallery, Dallas Museum of Art, and Harvard University Museums. He is the recipient of multiple prestigious grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Mid- America Arts Alliance, Texas Artists and Lawyers for the Arts, and the Houston Art Alliance. His work has also been featured in a variety of publications including The Village Voice, The Wall Street Journal, Art in America and ARTnews.

Artist Statement

I have never encountered an insight about traveling that I felt described my experiences as well as this quote from Maya Angelou:
“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”

We all tell stories with our lives, whether we realize it or not. That in itself is art. When I stepped foot onto the beautiful soil of Honduras for the first time in September of 2004, my story changed, for the better. I truly believe that the human spirit yearns for wholeness; it thirsts for the sacred knowledge that can only come by the uncomfortable expedition of the heart. I never imagined the impact that my travels would have on me. Now I cannot imagine what my life would be if I had not made these, at times, reluctant journeys. For in them, after all of the fears and trepidation subsided, what I found is when I embraced another person, looked into their eyes, what I saw was me.

Window to the World: The People & the Places is a tribute and celebration of all those that blessed my path with their love, kindness and humanity. They have made my own window by which I see and experience the world that much more robust and sublime. This exhibition is for them.

Artist Biography

Jerome Cabeen graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas with a Bachelors of Fine Art in 1990. He taught art for many years at the high school, middle school and elementary school levels in Houston, while painting and drawing on the side. In 2004, Cabeen begin an international journey that would lead to his immersion into photography. From 2004 through 2010, he lived in Honduras, Central America and Liberia, Africa, teaching art and directing Catholic missions.

His experiences in these countries, as well as the 30 others that he has visited, gave him a new window/lens/paradigm in which to see the common thread that connects us all, our humanity. The exhibition Window to the World: The People & the Places is a photo journal of his experiences and interactions with peoples and places from all around the globe.

Buddy (Will Ferrell) was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.
