Art Museum of Southeast Texas to Open Two New Exhibitions
The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) is pleased to present two new exhibitions opening Friday, January 23, 2026, on view through April 12, 2026: Loc Huynh: Beyond Sài Gòn and Liz Gates: Pulling Threads. A joint opening reception will be held at the museum on Friday, January 23 at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Artist talks will be held the night of the reception beginning at 7:15 pm.
Loc Huynh: Beyond Sài Gòn explores themes of personal history, cultural memory, and place through the lens of Vietnamese American identity. Huynh, a Vietnamese American artist originally from Texas and now based in New York City, draws from both Vietnamese heritage and Texas culture to create bold, visually striking works. The exhibition offers an intimate examination of Vietnamese American life in Texas, featuring an original mural installation and pop art–inspired portraits of friends and family.
Liz Gates: Pulling Threads presents mixed-media works by Houston-based artist Liz Gates which center themes of gendered labor, self-manifestation, and feminist motherhood. Incorporating found maternal materials such as embroidered tea towels and cloth diapers, Gates transforms domestic textiles into ethereal banners, sculptural structures, and tree-like columns. The exhibition also incorporates symbols selected from drawings created by AMSET staff and eighth-grade students participating in the Odom Academy Junior Docent program.
Together, these exhibitions reflect AMSET’s ongoing commitment to presenting contemporary artists whose work engages with identity, culture, and lived experience in meaningful and thought-provoking ways.
AMSET is open seven days a week, and admission is always free. For more information, visit www.amset.org, call (409) 832-3432, or follow @amsetx on social media for updates on exhibitions, events, and educational programs.
